D of E Silver Expedition July 2018
“Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina and The Waves sums up the qualifying expedition on Exmoor! The famous five team from year 10 of Danika, Archie, Peter, Romeo and Harley put on their boots and rucksacks to walk from Dulverton to Minehead via Exford and Porlock – a total of almost 30 miles. In temperatures close to 30 degrees, they carried all their own food, camping equipment and personal items to support their three-day/two night trek.
Energy and enthusiasm were in abundance as the group navigated across open moorland, through woods and along the north Somerset coast. The first day took them over Tarr Steps, a mediaeval stone clapper bridge that legend says is where the devil used to sunbathe! On the middle day they passed Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor. The views were stunning and according to the pupils it looked like a film set as it was too beautiful to be real. For the final leg of the route the South-West coast path led them along the cliff top with the Welsh coast just visible across the Bristol Channel.
Everyone showed resilience, determination, cheerfulness and team spirit for the entire expedition and easily passed this section of the award. At the campsite, they showed their maturity and we had various conversations from democracy to future career plans via the MacDonald’s menu and a bit of Peppa Pig. Thank you from Mr Harding and Mrs Colley for a fantastic successful few days.
