Humanities in Term 5

Term 5 has been a short but busy term for the Humanities department. With the focus for Year 11 being on exam preparation and in Key Stage 3 pupils were learning about everything from the reasons why we get so much rain in the UK to the origins of the slave trade.

Year 7 – home study

Year 7 always seem to excel themselves with their home study projects, below are some examples of Sikh temples (Gurdwara’s) that were made by some of our Year 7 pupils.

Swindon Literature Festival – The Holocaust  – Laurence Rees

On Friday 12th May fifteen year 10 pupils went to the Swindon Arts Centre to hear Laurence Rees speak about this new book ‘The Holocaust’. Laurence Rees is a former head of BBC History and made ground breaking documentaries such as   ‘Nazis: a Warning from History’ and Auschwitz, the Nazis and the ‘Final Solution.

Merton College, Oxford University

On Wednesday 10th May three year 12 students visited Merton College, Oxford University. Merton is the link college for LPA and was founded in 1264 AD. Alumni include Roger Bannister, JRR Tolkien, William Harvey and Lord Randolph Churchill.

The aim of the day was to give students a taster of Oxford University life and guidance on how to apply. The students experienced sessions on how to choose a subject at undergraduate level, funding and bursaries and took part in a personal statement workshop.

Year 7, 8 and 10 end of year exams

In term 6 Years 7, 8 and 10 will have end of year exams which they need to prepare for.

Year 7 and 8 exams will take place in the week beginning 12th June

Year 10 exams will take place in the week beginning 19th June

Year 7 will need to revise units on map skills, medieval England, introduction to RS, Africa, Asia and Afghanistan and Sikhism. They will be given further information by their class teachers as well as some lesson time to revise but it is highly recommended that revision is done at home as well.

Year 8 will need to revise units on tectonics, the Industrial Revolution, the Life of Jesus, Ecosystems, WWI and Hinduism. They will be given further information by their class teachers as well as some lesson time to revise but it is highly recommended that revision is done at home as well.

Year 10 will have exams in the following humanities subjects: History, Geography and Sociology.

Their class teachers will inform them of which topics they need to revise, with some time in lesson being used for exam technique practice. Students will have to complete thorough revision at home using resources from their teachers and exercise book notes. There are revision guides available to purchase through ParentPay for each subject, which are highly recommended as a revision aid.
