On Wednesday 10th May three year 12 students visited Merton College, Oxford University. Merton is the link college for LPA and was founded in 1264 AD. Alumni include Roger Bannister, JRR Tolkien, William Harvey and Lord Randolph Churchill.
The aim of the day was to give students a taster of Oxford University life and guidance on how to apply. The students experienced sessions on how to choose a subject at undergraduate level, funding and bursaries and took part in a personal statement workshop.
This is what the students had to say –
“I personally found the trip extremely helpful, as it gave me an insight into what life in a university college such as Merton college is really like, whereas before I didn’t know entirely what it was like to live on site. Similarly, I found the talks about oxford applications and personal statement writing very useful too, as it has taught me skills which I can use for both applying to oxford and any other university. This trip has been very useful and has made me consider oxford as an option of my further education”.
“I found that the trip to Merton College was very useful and we received some resources and information that would be very helpful when we come to write our personal statements and start applying for other universities. I also enjoyed the experience of the tour around the college and Oxford which gave an insight into University life and the opportunities it offers”.
